GLAD Australia Exercise Program

Next GLA:D program:    Tuesday 4th February 2025

At EBR Physio, we understand how challenging living with hip or knee osteoarthritis (OA) can be.  The GLA:D® (Good Life with OsteoArthritis) program was created to help people with hip or knee osteoarthritis (OA) feel better through simple, effective education and exercise. It’s based on the latest research and real-world feedback from people like you.

The GLA:D® Australia Program is led by a GLA:D® certified clinician dedicated to your success.  This program is unique in that the education and exercises provided can be applied to everyday activities, ensuring participants develop skills to self-manage their osteoarthritis. By strengthening and improving confidence with exercise, participants develop better capacity to become or stay active, prevent symptom progression, and reduce pain.

You don’t need a doctor’s referral, and Medicare may cover some of the costs. We can also discuss private health insurance options with you.

Is GLA:D® Right for You?

If you’re experiencing hip or knee pain due to OA, you’re not alone, and you don’t have to navigate this journey by yourself. The GLA:D® Australia program welcomes individuals with varying degrees of OA symptoms. However, if your pain stems from conditions such as tumors, inflammatory joint diseases, or fractures, it’s essential to discuss other options with your physiotherapist.

Proven Benefits

Participants in the GLA:D® program have reported remarkable improvements:

  • Reduced pain by 27% (hip) and 33% (knee).
  • Enhanced quality of life by 20% (hip) and 29% (knee).
  • Decreased reliance on pain medication by 45% (hip) and 49% (knee).
  • Fewer people felt the need for surgery after completing the program.

What to expect in the GLA:D® Program

At EBR Physio, we’re committed to making complex medical information easy to understand.  We’ll break things down in a way that makes sense to you, whether through one-on-one conversations or simple handouts.  Our therapists don’t just tell you what to do—they show you, guiding you through exercises and techniques that will help you recover. And even after your sessions, we’re still here for you, ready to provide support and encouragement whenever you need it.

Initial Assessment

We’ll start with an easy session to explain the program, understand your needs and measure your current functional ability.

Exercise and education

For six weeks, you’ll join small group sessions twice a week to improve your joint strength, control, and confidence. We’ll also cover important information about OA, its causes, treatment options, and ways to manage it on your own.

3-month check-in

After three months, you’ll meet with your physiotherapist to check your progress, set new goals, and reassess how you’re feeling.

  • What should I expect from a GLA:D exercise session?

The educational component at the beginning of the sessions provide an opportunity to learn the latest research and discuss it with your physio and other participants.

The GLA:D  exercise program includes 10 exercises, plus warm-up and cool-down, aimed at improving hip and knee strength. In the small group classes each person performs the exercises at their own level. Clinicians are trained to customize the program to suit each individual.

  • What are the benefits of the GLAD exercise program?

By strengthening and improving confidence with exercise, participants develop better capacity to become or stay active, prevent symptom progression and reduce pain.

  • How do your GLA:D exercises work

Each exercise is done slowly with a focus on proper movement so that you learn to activate the muscle properly. Our physios use a number of techniques to help you understand your movement limitations and how to correct them. These exercises focus on increasing the strength of the muscles in the lower body.

  • How do I get started with the GLA:D program?

You will need to have an assessment with one of our physios to determine whether the program would be suitable for you and your condition.  You can then book in with our reception team.
